i have a family member who has offered me a safe from (i.e. combination & lock) j. baum safe and lock co. everything appears to be in tack, but the finishes are a little faded due to age. the approx. exterior dimensions are 37" h (7" off ground due to steel wheels) x 25" w x 25" d. it appears to be semi-heavy (less than 1000 lbs). i strained to lift one corner by 1/2". the approx. interior dimensions are 21" h x 13" d x 13" w. once opened there is a metal door, which is opened with a key lock. beyond the metal/steel door there is four stacked drawers or shelves taking up about 1/3 of the interior width. the top drawer has a metal face and requires another key, the second drawer has a wood face and requires another key, and the bottom two are open. the entire interior is finished in wood that appears to be approx. 1/4" - 3/8" thick. *sorry, will post pictures once i get them taken. once the metal panel on the door is removed there appears to be a concrete material core and the locking mechanism. i am wondering on a scale of 1-10 what is the fire rating level (if any) and security level. i am wondering is the safe worth accepting.

these safes today have virtually no fire protection, and zero burglary protection. they are from approx 1916-1925. the biggest burden with these safes is the work involved in moving them. they have a value of up to $250 in reasonable condition. restoring these things is a pricy business. most that are restored are done for historical purposes. they are the last place that you want to put anything of value in.
