How to choose and use a home safe? | |
· Determine what you are putting in your home safe. If there are only documents like tax returns, photos, bonds and certificates, just pile them in one place and see how much space you will need. Precious items like antiques will require more space and/or a specific holder. Finally, see much room you have for the safe itself.
· For documents, electronic devices or film you will need a fire- and water-proof safe which during a fire has an internal temperature of 150 degrees of less. Some safes are made to weigh a lot more as an anti-burglar measure.
· A home safe is more convenient than a bank one as you do not need to travel much to obtain the documentation you need. Furthermore, in case of fire, emotionally precious items will not be lost or irreparably damaged.
· Always make sure that you are the only one that knows the combination to the safe and never leave a hard copy of it near it.
· It is best to conceal a home safe through a painting, moveable furniture or have it custom made in the shape of furniture.
· Do not rely on the safe to be an impenetrable fortress and always have copies of your documents whenever possible.
